Aaron

Graduation was interesting, to say the least. My uncle actually closed the shop to be there for me, and it was nice seeing the other families in attendance. There was just too much crying for my liking. Happy tears are different from grieving tears, but when somebody cries, it takes me back to the funeral, and I don’t know if I can deal with those feelings again. The principal calls my name to the stage, and I stand up. I look at my uncle in the bleachers and he smiles and raises a thumbs up. I wasn’t expecting that to hit me as hard as it did, and I take a deep breath to steady myself. Shaking hands with the principal, while holding my diploma felt... surreal. The guys from the football team give out a loud ‘woot woot’ as the crowd erupts into applause.

We finally did it! We accomplished so much in the last four years, and now a piece of paper grants us a multitude of future opportunities. I hope younger me is proud of all that we’ve done. We throw our caps into the air, clapping and hugging those around us. Everyone breaks off to find their families or group up to talk and hang out one more time at school.

I met with a National Guard recruiter last week, now I’ll be able to do something good with whatever the future holds for me. We talked about my options and I start training in a couple weekends. Kinsey told me she was going to try to get Autumn to go to college with her. I really hope her parents let her go there. She’s been following her father’s dream for her. She needs the freedom to follow her own dreams.

I’ve gone through every what-if scenario with our different paths, and they’re just that... too different. I can’t make her give up college to stay here with me, and I can’t follow her to college. I wouldn’t be able to pay for tuition and, honestly, I’d probably fail out of most of the required classes. I really hate to do it, but I have to talk to Autumn about us taking a break. I hoped to spend more time with her, but it seems like fate has other plans for us both.

Of course, her dad would be here today. The last time I saw him, I said some hurtful, but truthful things. I don’t think I can face him again just yet. A small group of football players and cheerleaders are grouped by the corner of the cafeteria. “Hey, guys.”

“Aaron! What’s up, bro?” One of the players asks, waving his arm for me to join them.

“Can I ask you guys a favor?”

“Sure,” a couple of them say in unison.

“I need to talk to Autumn a minute, but her dad is over there. I may have pissed him off last time I saw him and I don’t want him to know it’s me. Can you guys hide me and one of you call Autumn over?”

One of the girls puts her hand on her hip.
